The most important tip I can give someone, when building a successful niche website, is to take the time to do proper keyword research. This involves both time and leg work. So many people come to me with a set of 5 or so big keywords and immediately start building a site based around them. Once the site is built, they spend the next 6 months trying to rank it because of the competition.  However, what they failed to realize is that if they had spent the proper time picking out easier keywords, checking the competition, and analyzing link profiles, they could have picked out 50, or even a few hundred, keywords that would rank within months with minimal offpage SEO.
Writing copy for websites is another great freelancing option for those who have a way with words. Copywriting can involve writing the text for websites, press releases, promotional offline materials including leaflets and brochures, and any other professional text for businesses. Writing copy can be better paid than blog writing. However, clients can be more fussy, as they want the highest quality writing for the forefront of their website or advertising campaigns. Many freelance writers offer both copywriting and blog writing amongst their services. This can be a good way to juggle regular but lower paid clients (blogging) with the higher paid but ad-hoc project based copy work.
For beginners like myself , building niche websites has a huge learning curve: WordPress, keyword research, content creation, linking, monetization, etc. It can be easy to lose focus and motivation when trying to understand and apply all of these topics. My strategy going forward is to learn freelance skills first that I can start making money from immediately and then work on the more passive stuff like niche and ecommerce sites when I am already bringing in an income. However, I plan to blog about it all which is quickly developing into my new niche site 😉

Research Pricing (And Set Fair Starting Prices): Before setting prices for each item, research your local Craigslist website and (if possible) nearby yard sales to get a sense of how to price them. Remember that many buyers will try to haggle – so set prices a bit higher than your bottom dollar, but not so high that you’ll scare off first bids. 10% to 15% is a good rule of thumb. Consider bunching low-value items, such as old CDs, into lots of five or 10, or offer x-for-$y deals.
4. Have a clear monetization strategy first. People often tell me that their biggest problem is getting traffic. But the fact is that traffic is everywhere. It’s how you make money from the traffic that matters. For example, if you spend $50 on Facebook/Adword/Bing/etc to get 1000 visits to your website, and you get $200 back from them either buying your products or buying affiliate products through your links, would you be willing to spend more to acquire more traffic? Of course YES.

2) If you can’t find keywords with that type of search traffic, BUT find a keyword term which gets low search volumes and has low competition (I’ll get to that number in a moment), write about that keyword. You may not get a lot of traffic, but easy 1st page rankings are things I would not disregard, PLUS it’s just extra content for your site, so chase those keywords when you can’t find bigger searched ones.


For those with a large Twitter following, you can make money from your Tweets alone with Sponsored Tweets. You could be paid for sharing a business’s information, recommending restaurants or hotels, or tweeting pictures of you using or wearing products. As with all sponsored posts on social media, businesses will only be prepared to pay you to Tweet if you have a large following that you can influence. So work hard on building up a loyal fan base.
Paige, many plug ins are free. Some are paid. I do have paid ones, but only a few. You will be able to get going after that, but you do want to purchase a theme. I’d suggest Genesis and a child theme. You can see all the things that I recommend here on my blogging resources page, most of which are free. 🙂 I would NOT suggest a free theme for someone who wants to make money blogging. That is something you want to pay for, along with hosting.

Just curious, how much time would you say it would take the average person who has a decent understanding of how to do much of what you covered to get through all of these steps? Just a rough estimate. And how long, again, on average, after doing all of this would it take before that person starts seeing $500/month in a medium competitive niche – one that you would consider being pretty ideal?

I think there are a lot of mass link building strategies that will be effective for a period of time – especially private link networks, which are a bit of a different story. But most of those strategies will lose value over time at best, or ruin your site at worst. That’s why I do my very best to build links through good content and networking as much as possible.
The money is most certainly in the list. If you're at all interested in online marketing, setup email software and create a lead magnet that you can use in your sales funnel. Then, build up that list. It's often said that you can expect to earn about $1 per subscriber per month. If you have a list of 10,000 subscribers, that means you can earn roughly around $10,000 per month. You will need to deliver value and not pitch them on every email, but it is a very achievable goal in a short period.

I’ve got some real problems with Jaaxy and the WA keyword tool.I came across the Longtail Pro kw tool and have a free trial going at the moment. I’ll find ” winners” using Jaaxy and plug them into Longtail Pro only to find that the authority and domain ranks are so high that there is no way that the given keyword could be ranked is even worth the effort of composing content. 6. Pay more attention to paid traffic, especially Facebook advertising in 2015. This has been a big shift in my strategy. Google is unpredictable. And SEO traffic is not really free as people say. Paid traffic is different. You turn it on when you need it. Unless you stop paying, you consistently get traffic. The key is to get the math right with a good sales funnel.

Don’t spell their name wrong and be sure to type it how they type it (e.g. Problogger, not Pro Blogger).
If you already have a website or blog, look for vendors that offer related but noncompeting products and see if they have an affiliate program. Stick to familiar products and brands—they're easier to sell. For promotion, place simple text or graphics-based ads in appropriate places on your site; you can review or recommend products or create a dedicated sales page or website to promote a particular product.
For example, iStockPhoto.com, owned by Getty Images, requires you to apply to be a contributor. You can submit Photos, Illustrations, Video and Audio but you will need three samples of your work. If accepted, you'll be paid a 15% commission for each file downloaded and if you agree to be exclusive. If you make iStock your exclusive royalty-free agent, you can earn up to 45% with additional attention.
Some scams might involve asking you to pay for a “training” book or CD that explains how to make money in a certain business. Others charge for supposedly “exclusive” products that you’re supposed to sell at a premium. Avoid both of these scenarios. Remember, you should never have to pay to get a job. And if someone asks you to, you can be sure that it’s a scam.

Now you’ve got many different options to start earning online. If you saw something that really interests you, try it out and learn more about it. If you’re really wanting to make a full-time income online, you need to be dedicated to learning how to do what you want to do. There are tons of free resources out there. You just have to search for them!
